Food & Wine Pairing @ Farmhouse Deli

A girl has to eat (and drink…) and where else will I go? The Strand Hotel, has an unbeatable location where the weather always seems to be perfect and the view that presents itself is really amazing.
The Farmhouse Deli plays host to a number of Food & Wine Pairings during the year and I look forward to this event every month. This is my no.1 go to place, to relax and have some fun – whether it is a girls night out or a special date night. The food is fresh, delightful, cooked with love and paired with quality wine.
Our first course was the Amuse Bouche. The phyllo pastry basket was filled with a fresh citrus cream cheese mousse, topped with roasted pepper, garlic, red onions and homemade cured beef pastrami. The smell and taste of the citrus mousse flavor was absolutely amazing.

Next was the appetizer and all I can say is wow. The colours and the presentation of this dish was out of this world and I could literally not wait to taste it. The plate was elegantly decorated with an Asian style pan seared salmon with beetroot and green bean puree and honey glazed carrots finished with teriyaki sauce. If I could eat this dish for the rest of my life (along with the dish of the night…), I will die a happy girl… a very happy girl.

Following the appetizer, was the pan fried ostrich fillet in garlic butter with caramelized onion and cauliflower puree, finished off with a red grape jus and pineapple salsa. Seeing that this was the first time I ate ostrich with a jus, I was pleasantly surprised at the taste. It looked like a beef fillet and didn’t taste like game at all.

Who doesn’t like a nice glass of red wine and some cheese? Ending the evening with a grand finale was grilled Camembert cheese, served with a red wine poached pear and homemade Cape fruit chutney. This was the perfect ending to yet another perfect evening hosted by Farmhouse Deli.

I am saving the best for last… Even though this was not the last course, it was by far my favorite.
This next picture says it all! All I can say is WOW, WOW and WOW! This little “mousse apple” was the most delicious thing I have eaten since sliced bread. I LOVED it. It was a classic sour cherry mousse with chocolate served on a cream cheese and white chocolate brownie, finished off with a little crumble, fruit pulps and jelly. It was superbly done and demonstrated great technical skills. It was also very interesting to learn more about the Straw Wine from Rustenburg Winery, which they paired with the yummy dessert. This white wine is naturally sweet and not made of your usual grapes – it is actually grapes that have been dried to concentrate their juice and gives it its natural sweet taste. What made it interesting is the fact that they gave this Straw Wine to woman who were in labour to assist with the pain during birth… I can’t help but to come to the conclusion that this might be the reason, why woman over the years needed wine for sanity reasons?

We ate all this in a space of two and a half hours and it is hard to believe that this was all done in such a short time, but everything ran like clockwork – thanks to the great team working at the Farmhouse Deli. Every month you can experience new food and great wine with their unique “Food & Wine Pairing” evenings – only at the Farmhouse Deli @ The Strand Hotel in Swakopmund. I can’t think of a better way to spend an evening with friends, family and especially loved ones.
